Although far from beaches and great monuments the south west of France remains timelessly popular with holiday makers.
Its amicable landscape of broad rivers and gentle hills is a place with little traffic where eagles and Kites soar over fields at noon and owls on fencepost watch you drive by at night.
The Gite is located just outside the small village of Savignac De Nontron in the Perigord Region of south west France approximately one hours drive south of Limoges, the old region synonymous with the department of the Dordogne. The region boasts over a 1000 castles, fortified churches and medieval villages.
The region Perigord Vert contained in the triangle formed by the three Towns of Perigueux, Angouleme and Limoges and is now protected as part of a part of the Parc Naturel Regional Du Perigord-Limousin.
The area boasts an abundance of wildlife with wild boar, buzzards, lizards, woodpeckers and Hoopoe

The name Perigord comes from the Gaulish nation known as the Petrocorii (“the four tribes”)
High on its promontory is Nontron (In Celtic the valley of ash trees which began as a Gaulish oppidum over the River Bandiat (Class 1 Trout River).Since the 15th Century Nontron has been famous for its knives with boxwood handles. You can see and buy them at Coutellerie. These days the Town makes a better living making neckties and porcelain for Hermes of Paris
The market at Piegut is worth a visit with its splendid stalls
Grotte De la Mairie has prehistoric engravings of animals discovered back in 1889 from the late Magdalenian period.

The main road from Nontron leads south to Brantome a charming town of medieval and Renaissance houses built on an island in the river Dronne. “The Little Venice of the Dronne” The town has a good selection of tea rooms and restaurants.
Grotte de Villars the largest underground network of Caves in the Perigord with 13 km explored to date. Unlike most caves in the Dordogne, this combines natural art-brilliant white translucent stalactites and draperies-with prehistoric drawings in magnesium oxide dating back to 30000 BC.
